In general, clothing that was manufactured before 1920 and vintage clothing from 1920 to 1980 is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, usually referred to the clothing that mimics the style of an earlier era. Clothing produced more recently, is often called modern or contemporary fashion.
Although there has always been some demand for old and / or second-hand clothes, awareness, demand and acceptance of these has increased dramatically since early 1990. This growing interest is partly due to the greater visibility, as vintage clothing is always worn by celebrities like Julia Roberts, Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss and Dita von Teese. There was also a growing interest in environmental sustainability in terms of reuse, recycling and repairing rather than throwing things away. A revival of historically sub cultural groups, such as rockabilly and swing dancing has also played a role in the increased interest in vintage clothing.
If you'd like certain people are attracted to vintage clothing include:
Style: Vintage clothing has always been a favorite of creative personalities, offering a wide range of styles of fantasy.
Detail: hand finishing, unusual buttons, hand embroidery, handmade lace, crochet, applique, beads and other techniques.
Unique: most items were to measure, and others have been manufactured in small quantities.
Value for money: sell clothes in general, at a cost far below new modern clothing like.
Expensive materials: many of the more unusual types of material are no longer manufactured, or have become prohibitive.
Good quality: they are designed to be used in the past and family members, for which they were built with robust materials, well cut and well made, with generous hems tabs that allow personalized adjustment and reform.
History: an appreciation of the past, the roles of previous generations and the skills of respected designers.
Investment: some people buy to collect rather than use, and increasingly, the good quality vintage clothing, especially items that well-known designers are sought after by collectors.
Sometimes, fashion design cycle becomes the story of inspiration, much like the original clothes vintage (retro or old) are producing garments. These styles are usually referred to as "vintage inspired" or "vintage reproductions" in terms of fidelity to the historical conception, and serve as a convenient alternative for those who love an old style but prefer a modern interpretation.
